The credit card-smart card technology is getting more advanced and convenient for people everyday,
but the thieves are exploiting this technology to their gain! The Technology: I started out writing programming for the early Bar code scanners. It was a revolutionary technology whereby you could ‘scan’ a printed code and retrieve up to eight digits of data very quickly. Like all technologies, the advances over the years have always been in the direction of, more data, faster, using less space to store it. The Bar Code led the way to the magnetic strip on the back of your credit card. The next step has been the RFID embedded chip. This chip is basically a micro thin memory chip that can be housed in something as thin as a credit card. This chip can hold a tremendous amount of data. It can be written to, and read from, very quickly. The RFID chip also did not have to be slid through a scanner. The Proximity Scanner meant that you could just ‘wave’ your card near to the scanner and it could be read. These RFID chips are now used in credit/debit cards, building security cards, drivers license and state id cards, and even hotel pass key cards. The Bad Guys: First off, let me say this….Please Don’t Blame The Technology! The companies that use this technology did so to make your life easier. They certainly had no intention of putting their customers at risk. But, criminals are clever, and constantly looking for new ways to commit crime. I often wonder, why can’t they put all this brain power to work and make an honest living? But, sadly, that is a whole other discussion. The fact is, card scanner/readers are now readily available. I’ve seen card scanners for sale on online auction sites for less than $20! These scanners can be hidden in a purse, attaché, or laptop case. The criminal will pass you on the street, or stand next to you in line at the store and WHAM, they’ve got your credit card number, name, passwords, and who knows what else that has been saved to your credit card chip, business security pass card, ID cards - the list goes on and on. Credit card theft is a multi billion dollar business. The thieves can use your credit card number directly, or often, sell credit card numbers to other thieves for profit. In some cases, they can now write that data to a new security card and can now access your business site, without triggering the alarm system. They can walk right in, day or night, and there is nothing to stop them. How to Stop Them: Our solution is almost artful in it’s simplicity.
